ABOUT THAT COLLAPSING BRIDGE

Sometimes the causes for a man-made disaster are not all that complicated.

Non-Union Contractor Caused FIU Bridge Collapse

The contractor charged with building the bridge at FIU was hostile to Building Trades Unions and was a major Republican donor
"Politico is reporting that during the time that Munilla was bidding on the project they donated $50,000 to Florida Governor Rick Scott and $250,000 to candidates running in Florida. While it is not clear whether this helped them win the bid, it may have led to the DOT, which is overseen by Scott, not looking closely at the work that was done by the non-union workers at Munilla."
Why does a company want to use non-union workers?  Because they want cheap labor.  And the other way they save money is by using cheap materials.  Using inexperienced workers, who, even if they saw something being done wrong, could not confidently report it, is not the way to build a structure that lives depend on.

my fam history was union..and they all benefited in a lot of ways..anuities .healthcare.what have ya..pay other than the distribution side of it.they bid on to get work at 80 percent.which sucked.. i have had scale when work was down n slow..but the 27/28  yr period paid off well irreguardless.the one yr..i worked 3 month 33 grand.dist  side with local gas stuff.took in the past 9 yrs just to do that ..prior it was 27 to 30 g a yr..the only downfall in the distribution work..union done nothing for you..but us guys did good for the union keeping it going where as.some scale jobs.2 to 4 month out of the yr on ave..me sit around that long..nope..so i stuck it out because future benefits for retirement and savings..but.get hurt.then they do nothing to protect..so..once all the screwing handed my way..i left karma and god to handle the judgement call and got out..well.had no options obviously.and trust me..it sucks being in my shoes..i will never hide..i missed what i done.noth the vast i worked around..i gave my all and best.and it is what it is..somedays i get annoyed the outcome.but..its all b&w  it will never happen ass much as i wished 6 more yrs.so..i accept facts as they r.and just rely on good memories..and the ill minded.well they have to answer to their actions and not of my probs..

anyway..time to beat off the path..relocate to the other chair and reclaim back some lost time from last week..

Just being non-union workers should not necessarily mean they are unskilled; you can have unskilled labourers  joining a union.  The main thing is not union but unskilled.  It appears that the main cause of the bridge collapsing was the tensioning rod failure; did the rod break or did the concrete fail?  However, it is also clearly a failure of engineering that I outlined in my post on this.

It is true that unions have been under attack in the US.  The current attack is that one can not be forced to pay union fees in a union company.  The idea is that if one can get all the benefits of the union without joining, they won't join and the union collapses due to no funds.  Of course one could say that if you don't join the union you don't get the benefits but then that would fall under some claiming that they are being discriminated against by not being paid the same for the same work.  I have never worked where there was a union but I have had family members that have and they reported that overall, it was better under union companies than non union companies.  However, there has been abuses in the large unions and they have become pyramid schemes where all the union fees flows to the top.  Unions can hold a lot of power and power does corrupt.  The most famous is the Jimmy Hoffa case; they probably will never find his remains; they could have been scattered over that farm one claimed he was buried on.

amen..i worked around non union..just like a raod job.done by non union..alford baty..something like that..DICK corp out of pitt had to re do some the work.and the one bridge 2 yrs lter the one side had to be tore off and redone..the cost to refix was more than the whole bridge..cheap material.yep.2 beams tested tensile strength.and 40,000 lb difference.make a bow..hell yeah..did concrete get cracking at 6 month of traffic.hell yeah..was concrete on parts no bridge  have issues at the joints.hell yeah..

minus 4 1 inch joiners.yep that will cause bucking guess thats why 1/4 mile the road was ripped up n replaced..gas industry..was their issues..yep.lots short cuts and you dont take short cuts running 1 inch or half into a home..results never fair out..

here is another and i dont get into politics..but..whom had multiple bankruptsies..along with building problems...yours truly the snowflake having hillary sheep at hi feet..oh hillary sheep.yeah.deplorable..now what fools be calling themself that..idiotic but what ever..to much a circus act and i have no room for clowns...just personal opinion..but thing is..used non union and goal is destroy the union..thats a no brainer..but lots the unions is what built america right..so its been well known via afl-cio that snowflake wants gone n never will happen..like that wall.non union.but ehh he has that screwed up so some say and i really dont care.just a waste tax payers money in my opinion..house homeless.thats fixing things..but anyways.screw politics..

want a job done with pride.get those worthy of doing it right..another example.snow flake did his thing with harley..and i know someone was nearby at dc when that scenario went down..and with the running of the mouth to make harley great..lots changed with in hd corp..misouri plant shutting down and being moved to local plant across the river....so..whats that have to say..wanted to create more jobs..but funny right after office..new paint system went into the york plant..automation..imagine how many guys dont need to be needed with that..I know all about that bs ordeal..my bud is master painter..35 yrs..and lots more things heading for a change i cant say..but..whats all this going to do..the changes is to hurt harley financially in near future and push out the union because lots rules and crap is already in for change..much like the unionized auto industry..dont sound like make america great..that catphase was the most single word that feed a lot of sheep thinking it was good...but truthfully..its not..does it much matter..nope.they do what ever they can to screw shite up..already blew to much cash on military..n wanted them to build so i read part of it..in disgus..i could not read more..in my theory..both sides has and always will b screwed up..we need more patriotism..n unity solidarity to be strong.and not happening in my life time..true patriots r a dying breed..

cheap is never a good thing for the most part..and greed kills..this is all based on opinions...i respect others...but do note..i hate politics.i could fare well somewhere deep in nature away from the insanity..
