Google Kills XMPP

Years after announcing that XMPP connectivity to Google Voice would end, Google finally killed XMPP.  The strange thing is that Google appears to have a proprietary SIP connection to Google Voice that they have shared with Polycom but not with anyone else.  This is a strange position for Google to take; can we expect more in the future?  Google claimed that they were using industry standards but that is not the case.  Currently my VoIP line is down.

Simon Telephonics may have to shut down his Google Voice Gateway.  I connected to Simon when my PBX went down as I did not have any 64 bit hardware free for building a new PBX.  Simon only charged a small one-time fee to connect to his server.  While Simon was able to get the server to connect to the Google SIP servers; not industry standards SIP, he is having issues with the load on the server when several thousand users' ATA register with the system.  We know that Google has some deal with Polycom; the sip server is obihai.sip.google.com.

They are working on a Google Voice trunk for Asterisk that uses the new non standard SIP that Google uses.  If that works out, then I will just set the PBX back up in house.  There are advantages to having an in house PBX but I will need a 64 bit box to run it.  There are version for the Raspberry Pi but I really don't have money for buying hardware at the moment.

Google is not really sharing the SIP credentials but there are those working to figure it out.  It is interesting that Google gave the SIP credentials to Polycom; as if they are partnering with Polycom for Google Voice and will require everyone that wants to use Google Voice to buy the Polycom hardware.  We will see how this plays out.
