How to talk yourself into a higher ticket and lose an election

First-term Democrat Jennifer Schwartz Berky lost to Republican Brian Woltman, 1,030-811, on Tuesday for the Ulster County Legislature seat in District 7.

Two weeks before the election, the town of Ulster released a video from May 24 due to a request filed under the Freedom of Information Law. The video showed Berky during a traffic stop sobbing, pleading, arguing, screaming and begging a police officer to let her go without a ticket. She said she was "completely broke" and had "PTSD." The video went viral and has been viewed more than 265,000 times on YouTube.

Three days after the video was made public, Berky issued a statement apologizing for her behavior. Many readers' comments on news sites stated their disappointment with her actions during the traffic stop.

Schwartz Berky could face an ethics investigation if someone complains she tried to use her position to dodge a speeding ticket.

According to the Daily Freedman, Woltman lost to Berky in District 7 two years ago.

Woltman stated that the county needs leaders in government who will listen to the messages of its residents and he said he would work to "make it as reasonable as possible" for people to open businesses in the county, according to the Freedman.
