The Old Girl Let Me Down

I dropped off the turn plough and when I climbed back on to move to the disc all I got was whirl, whirl, whirl, when I pressed the starter.  Dang, the bendix won't engage again.  On these old 8N tractors the starter bendix gear engages through inertia instead of an electrical solenoid as found on newer vehicles.  Nothing to do but remove the starter and clean the bendix.  It has been three years since I had to do this.  The starter is heavy and you have to be careful of it separating on you.  Once sprayed with cleaner and back on the tractor the Old Girl started without hesitation.

    I had an early 80's chevy truck that had a 379( I think) engine in it that had been converted to a diesel in the factory. I have never seen another engine like it. It had fuel injection and glow plugs. The starter went bad. I have changed many starters on vehicles so I naturally didn't shy away from changing that one. I removed the 2nd bolt and almost threw out my shoulder when the starter dropped. I didn't know the difference to a starter for a diesel to a starter for a gasoline engine, lol.

    That beast went through so many starter bolts due to the torque it took to start the engine in cold weather.

    Sometimes I wish I had more mechanical knowledge - and then I realize that if I did, I'd have to do more of it so I'm grateful I don't!{#}

    I am going to have to repair the lift on the tractor.  I knew it was getting worst and I know exactly why.  Some man talked us into using a lift cylinder that had some scores.  I had my doubts at the time and voiced them but being new to tractor lifts I took him at his word.  It isn't difficult work but it does involved heavy lifting.  No matter, I will hook the come-along to a hook in the ceiling of the shed and use it to do the heavy lifting.  The top of the lift is heavy cast iron so I have to be careful.  I rebuilt the pump at the time the cylinder was replaced with the one the guy sold us a bridge on.  So I know the pump has the output it should.  I have the original cylinder and I think all it needs is some honing.  I can get the gasket kit and it comes with a new O-ring for the piston.  We replaced the original three metal ring piston with the O-ring one.

      I grew up in a family where all labour was shared.  Dad taught me a lot of things as I grew up.  He explained to me as we worked in the crawl space how to sweat copper pipes and that you have to drain the water because the water will never let the pipe get hot.  I even helped him repairing automatic transmissions and rebuilding engines.  At the same time Mum was teaching me the things she knew.  Mum helped Dad work on cars before we came along; helping him install transmissions and pulling engines.  Dad and Mum both grew gardens so I was out helping in the gardens before I could even walk.
